Curved Radiators and How to Measure for Them

Bay windows are among the most charming architectural features in homes. They bring in natural light, add depth to a room, and create cosy nooks that are both stylish and functional. However, adding a heating element to a bay window area can typically be a tricky thing to do due to the wall space not being flat.
Standard radiators often won’t fit well to the angled or curved wall of a bay window, leaving an unsightly gap at the rear. This is where a curved radiator comes in - a tailor-made solution for curved spaces.
In this guide, we’ll explore what curved radiators are, when and why to use them, and most importantly, how to measure accurately for a perfect fit.
What Are Curved Radiators?
Our Curved Leoni Radiator follows the contour of a curved wall and is a bespoke radiator, custom-manufactured based on your specific measurements. Offering the same high output and classic column radiator aesthetic as our bestselling Leoni Column Radiators, they are suitable for both modern and period-style interiors.
Benefits of Curved Radiators
Tailored Fit
Curved radiators are manufactured to match the exact arc of your bay window or curved wall. This precise fit makes them ideal for spaces where symmetry and layout are important.
Efficient Heating
By following the wall contour, curved radiators allow for better airflow and more even heat distribution, especially useful in bay windows, which often lose more heat.
Aesthetic Appeal
Their shape enhances architectural features, especially in Victorian or Edwardian homes. Curved models like our Leoni Curved offer a timeless elegance that enhances your interior.
Space-Saving
They optimise space in rooms where conventional radiators may interfere with furniture or restrict layout options.
How to Measure for a Curved Radiator
Measuring for a curved radiator requires a little more care than measuring for a flat model. The key is to provide accurate information so we can calculate the exact curve of your bay.
Here are the three essential measurements:
1. Radiator Size
Work out the BTU(Heat Output) and size of radiator needed to deliver the correct output for your room. You only need to tell us the size of the straight radiator you require, we will work out the bending and profile

2. Chord (Straight Width)
This is the straight-line measurement across the front of the bay window - from one side to the other.
Tip: Use a tape measure and measure at floor level from the left-hand corner of the bay to the right-hand corner.
3. Camber (Depth of the Curve)
Camber is the distance from the midpoint of the chord (above) back to the furthest point of the curved wall or skirting board. It defines the depth of the arc.
Tip: Find the midpoint of your chord, then measure straight back to the curve.

Additional Considerations
Valve Clearance
You’ll need to leave space at each end of the radiator for valves - allow an extra 80-120mm on your width. This is crucial for both sizing and functionality. Your straight radiator must be at least 100mm shorter than the width of your bay/chord.
Height
Ensure the radiator height fits under your windowsill with adequate clearance. A general rule is to allow at least 40mm between the top of the radiator and the bottom of the sill. The Leoni Curved can come with welded feet - this increases the height by 97mm.
Section Count and Columns
When making curved radiators, we can use 2, 3 or 4 column sections, in heights of 300mm, 400mm, 500mm or 600mm.
Curves
In order to calculate the radius of the radiator, we assume a distance of 45mm between the wall and the back of the radiator. In addition to the curve, the radiator's internal radius must be a minimum of 1000mm for 2 and 3 column radiators and 1300mm for 4 column radiators. We will contact you if there are any issues in achieving the correct curve for your dimensions.
Final Thoughts
Curved radiators are an excellent solution for bay windows and curved walls. With a tailored fit, enhanced aesthetics, and efficient heating performance, they offer long-term benefits in both form and function.
By taking the time to measure correctly and choosing a quality model like the Leoni Curved, you’ll not only solve the practical issue of heating a bay window but also add a striking design feature to your room.
